February-2012 Loy Krathong Festival 2011

Dining under the moonlight on the evening of Loy Krathong – 10th November 2011

Loy Krathong is one of the most celebrated of all festivals held in Thailand which takes place mid
November on the full moon of the 12th lunar month.

It’s origin stems back to India, a Brahman festival in worshiping the Gods- Siva, Vishnu, and Brahma.
When Thai people adopted Buddhism, they adapted this ceremony in worshipping the foot-print
of Buddha by the festival of the floating lantern (Loy Khom) in the period of Sukhothai.  During this time,
it was a favourite concubine of the Sukhothai King, called “Noppamas” who designed a floating lantern in
the form of a Lotus Flower to release onto the waters in worshipping the River Goddess.

Today in modern Bangkok & many parts of Thailand, the tradition carries on with making many versions
to the Krathong. “Loy” meaning to float and “Krathong” meaning a lotus shaped vessel.  The Krathong is
usually made of banana leaves & flowers with incense sticks & candles added. You may also find Thai people
adding a lock of hair, a nail clipping & coins as a gesture in releasing their sins or misfortune to float down the
river in asking the Goddess of Water for forgiveness in becoming a celebration for a new beginning.
Other variations come at night with people releasing thousands of Sky lanterns drifting up into the heavens.

On the night of Loy Krathong, Phi Phi Island Village is to offer their guests the Lana style Loy Krathong
of Thai Classical dance and foods from many regions of Thailand including the Resorts tradition of staging the
Nang Noppamas Queen contest where Guests will be able to cast their votes in selecting the winner of the
Resorts own Beauty pageant.  Upon the close of the night’s entertainment, Guests will be asked to
participate in joining together in the traditions of Loy Krathong to release their floating Krathong in the
  waters near the Resort.

Come celebrate with us and enjoy our famously renowned large buffets on the beach for great value
